Ryan Snider

(3rd Year Engineering Chemistry)

Hi Sci’30, welcome to Queen’s!

My name is Ryan and I’m going into my 3rd year of Engineering Chemistry. I’m so excited to work with you in APSC 101 and 103 this year!

This summer I had the opportunity to develop the APSC 103 projects as the Program Development Lead for the course. I was able to work closely with Dr. Hungler and Aphra to develop these wonderful projects with our industry partners, design teams, and local businesses. I was able to improve my communication skills with external clients and learn more about course development. I am looking forward to applying these skills as a Project Manager this year!

Last summer, I had the chance to work in the Environment Division of the City of Kingston. I was able to collect field data and samples at construction sites, monitoring wells, and historic monuments. Last year I was a member of the design team Qlean in the carbon capture node and was also a Student Engagement Manager on Queen’s Backing Action on the Climate Crisis. This year, I am rejoining Qlean and will be joining Queen’s Nuclear Engineering Team. If you can’t tell – I am very passionate about the environment!

I was a FREC last year and I am OTIS this year. O-week is an exciting time and I hope you all consider applying to help run orientation – it is just as fun as it was in first year!

Fun facts about me are that I like to travel, read, watch superhero movies/TV, and am learning Italian! I look forward to meeting you and am open to discussing first year/the Queen’s Engineering experience. If you have any questions, or just want to chat, don’t hesitate to reach out at ryan.snider@queensu.ca

Ciao!

Alara Haskan

(3rd Year Chemical Engineering)

Hi Sci’ 30!

My name is Alara and I am going into my third year of Chemical Engineering, and I am so excited to work with you in APSC 101 and 103! I have really enjoyed all of my design courses throughout university, and these two were fundamental in developing my engineering skillset.

This summer, I worked as the Development Assistant for the second year design course, APSC 200, helping to update course content and develop projects. I learned a lot about course administration, student perspectives, and effective teaming. The summer prior, I was the business and operations manager at Science Quest, a summer camp run through the Engineering Society. I am hoping the skills I have developed will help me better manage teams in 101 and 103.

Outside of school and work, I am a runner, I play soccer, read, and I like to cook. I find that through the time-demands of engineering, I am still able to make time for what I enjoy; and I hope to help the students I manage on this front as best I can.

If you have any questions at all about first year, involvement opportunities, or APSC 101 and 103, please don’t hesitate to email me at a.haskan@queensu.ca. I’m so excited to meet all of you, see you in September!

Avery Tribe

(3rd Year Mechatronics Engineering)

Hey Sci’30, welcome to ENGINEERING!

My name is Avery and I am entering my 3rd year of mechatronics and robotics engineering. I am so excited to be your PM for 101 and 103 in the upcoming year! These design projects were my first break out experience with hands on engineering, and I am excited to assist you all through the same opportunities.

Outside of being your PM, you might see me on the Queens Knights Robotics Team, working on the software of our competition robots and making them autonomous. Along with design teams, I am also a frequent member of the Queens board game club, I love playing complicated games like Root and Scythe with my friends. You will also see me frequently off campus on the public frozen skating areas that the town of Kingston makes in the parks and downtown. I love skating and I highly recommend you bring your skates for the winter if you love it too! I also like to get out and visit friends and family. In the picture of me next to this text, I am visiting my brother at the university of Guelph, where we embraced in a Guelph tradition and decorated the cannon in the centre of their campus with some fun colours you might recognize.

I cannot recommend joining in on the Queens community enough. Make sure you join some clubs and teams to meet new people and do things that you love!

I wasn’t always in Tron at queens; I started off in general first year and transferred in the second semester. I found that I love working with on projects that contain electronic, mechanical, and software components, and the Tron course plan fits well with what I like to do. If anyone has any questions about the transferring process, feel free to reach out.

If your first year is going to be anything like mine, it is going to be so much fun! If any of you have any questions both about your projects or what goes on in upper year, feel free to send me a message at tribe.avery@queensu.ca. Can’t wait to see you all next September!

Olivia Coady

(5th Year Electrical Engineering)

Hey Sci’30,

My name is Liv and I’m a fifth-year Electrical Engineering student. I’m so excited to be one of the Project Managers this year and help you navigate your first engineering design experience! I can still remember how I felt going into first year – so excited to be in a totally new environment with new opportunities and people to meet, but also equally overwhelmed at the idea of moving away from home and having to take engineering courses. It was overall such a transformative year and I’m really looking forward to supporting you along the way.

This past year, I completed an internship at Marvell as a Digital Design Intern, where I worked on RTL design and ASIC development for high-performance digital systems. One of my favorite parts of the experience was seeing how concepts I learned in first and second year were applied to real engineering work. It reminded me that the skills you’re developing this year really do become the foundation for exciting opportunities later on.

Outside of academics, I’ve enjoyed getting involved in the engineering community. In second year, I was an Engineering Orientation Leader, where I had the opportunity to lead first-year students during orientation week and help them transition into university life. I love meeting new people and helping students make the most of their time at Queen’s.

A fun fact about me is that I’m ending my summer with my first trip to Europe! I’ll be spending a month exploring and meeting up with my friends before returning to Queen’s.

I’m looking forward to meeting all of you and seeing what your teams create this year! Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions about courses, campus life, or first year. I’m always happy to help! You can reach me at olivia.coady@queensu.ca

Meredith Flood

(5th Year Mechanical Engineering with Internship)

Hey Sci ’30!

My name is Meredith Flood, and I’m going into my fifth year of Mechanical Engineering. For the past 15 months, I’ve completed my QUIP internship as an Operations Readiness Student Coordinator with Imperial Oil Limited in Calgary, Alberta, where I’ve gained firsthand experience at the intersection of project engineering and real-world oil production. My role involved coordinating and supporting the startup of a new pilot project testing more sustainable oil extraction technologies. Before that, I worked as a Process Engineering Summer Student at Schaeffler Automotive in Stratford, Ontario, where I learned how to optimize manufacturing processes and apply lean principles in an automotive production environment.

I’m passionate about getting involved in the Queen’s community and have had the opportunity to contribute in several meaningful ways. In second year, I volunteered as a FREC during Orientation Week, and in third year, I was a teaching assistant for MREN103 (the mechatronics equivalent of APSC103). I loved mentoring, supporting and working with first-year students, and I’m so excited to have the opportunity to do it again this year for APSC101! Outside of academics, you can typically find me at the ARC, grabbing a coffee at the Tea Room, or spending time with friends.

Welcome to Queen’s Engineering, I’m so excited to meet you all in the fall!

Anna Marshall

(5th Year Mechanical Engineering with Internship)

Hi Sci’30!

My name is Anna, and I am going into my 5th year of mechanical engineering. Throughout my degree, I have completed 3 internships, spanning across the shipbuilding and consulting industry. I worked my first internship at Seaspan ULC in the Integrated Logistics Support department where I gained lots of knowledge on the provisioning of large naval vessels used by both the Royal Canadian Navy and Coast Guard. Last summer, I interned at Deloitte as a Capital Projects Analyst where I learned so much about project management for a wide variety of large infrastructure projects. This summer, I returned to Seaspan, where I am working with their Project Management team for the Joint Support Ships they are building for the Royal Canadian Navy.

As someone who’s passionate about getting involved in the Queen’s community, I’ve had the opportunity to contribute in a variety of meaningful ways. I’ve been involved with EngSoc’s merchandise brand, Campus Equipment Outfitters, first as a Brand Ambassador, and then as the Internal Sales Manager. I’ve also loved being part of Orientation Week, where I was a FREC in second year and a member of Water Team in third year and fourth year. What I’ve valued most in all these roles are the incredible people I’ve worked with, the mentorship I’ve received from upper years, and mentorship I’ve been proud to pass along

to first years and younger students. Outside of academics and extracurriculars, I love to travel, go hiking, and do anything active outside!

Welcome to Queen’s Engineering, I am so excited to meet you all!

Briar Harshaw

(5th Year Civil Engineering with Internship)

Hello Sci ’30, and welcome to Queen’s Engineering!

My name is Briar, and I’m a fourth-year Civil Engineering student. I’m excited to be one of your Project Managers for APSC 101/103 this year!

For the past 16 months, I’ve been completing a professional internship at Ontario Power Generation on the Civil Plant Design Team. During this time, I’ve gained hands-on experience in structural design, technical coordination, field inspections, and multidisciplinary collaboration within the nuclear industry. It’s been a valuable opportunity to see how the skills we develop at Queen’s can be applied in real-world engineering projects.

I have worked as both a Project Manager and a Communication Assistant for APSC 101/103 in previous years, which helped me build experience in project coordination, communication, teamwork, and problem solving!

As I head into my final year at Queen’s, I’ve really enjoyed getting involved in the engineering community. I’ve participated in the Queen’s Bridge Building Team for two years and was also the Sponsorship Coordinator for the Queen’s University Engineering Sustainable Solutions and Technologies Competition in my third year. These experiences have given me the chance to work with amazing people, take on leadership responsibilities, and get involved in hands-on design and team-based projects!

First year can feel overwhelming at times, but I’m here to support you through your projects and help you make the most of your first year in engineering. Feel free to reach out to me at briar.harshaw@queensu.ca, if you have any questions, whether about classes, design teams, internships, or university life in general. I’m really looking forward to meeting you all!

Jacintha Groen in ‘t Woud

(5th Year Mechanical Engineering with Internship)

Hi everyone!

My name is Jacintha, and I am a fifth-year Mechanical Engineering student at Queen’s University.

Throughout my degree, I’ve been involved with numerous clubs and activities. I’ve worked as both an APSC 101 Technical TA and an APSC 101 Communications TA, been involved with the Queen’s Rocket Engineering Team, volunteered with numerous initiatives run through the Engineering Society (including being a FREC!), helped run the Queen’s Engineering Conference, and more. More recently, I have been working as a Jr. Applications Engineering Specialist at NTN Bearing Corporation of Canada, where I have been learning how mechanical systems come together in a variety of real-world industrial applications.

Some of my most meaningful experiences, however, have happened outside of Kingston. In 2024, I participated in a summer internship in Lithuania as a Workshop Design Engineering Intern. The following year, I had the privilege of representing Queen’s at the Cross-Cultural College Program in Japan, which included presenting my team’s research at the Canadian Pavilion at the World Expo. Seeing how engineers, business leaders, and innovators from around the world work together gave me a new appreciation for the role engineering plays beyond technical design. In 2025, I also spent a semester studying abroad at Lund University in Sweden, which was an experience that had a lasting impact on me. Living and learning in a new country challenged me to step outside my comfort zone and broadened my perspective. These international experiences really showed me that engineering is ultimately about people, and that diverse perspectives often lead to the most creative and impactful solutions.

Outside of engineering, you’ll usually find me planning my next trip or volunteering in my community. I love meeting new people, experiencing different cultures, and saying yes to new opportunities.

If you have any questions about the course, or just want some advice on first-year engineering, feel free to send me an email: jacintha.g@queensu.ca. Looking forward to working with you this year!

Charis Chang

Hi Sci’30!

My name is Charis, and I will be going into my 3rd year of mining engineering! I’m super excited to work with you in APSC 101 and 103 this year! While the courses can be challenging, these skills are vital to navigating future engineering courses. I personally developed the basis of my technical report writing and presentation skills from APSC 101/103, so I’ll provide support on helping you build these skills!

I recently completed a 4-month internship at SGS as a minerals and metallurgy intern (lab technician), where I got a lot of hands-on skill handling various heavy machinery and performing intricate chemical tests. Apart from this, I am very involved in the Queen’s Community as a current Smith Engineering Ambassador, and Director of Internal Affairs at QMIND! If you are curious about any of these clubs, shoot me an email and I would be happy to give more insight.

Outside of school and work, I love cycling, baking, and thrifting! I also enjoy long walks by the pier and a sweet treat to cap off the day!

First year can be daunting, but I am here to support you through your journey in first year! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions (academic, extracurricular, hobbies, etc), I am always down to help where I can. I can be reached at 23mqsy@queensu.ca

Michael Chiaravalloti

(3rd Year Mechanical Engineering)

Hi Sci’30!

My name is Michael Chiaravalloti and I am in my 3rd year of Mechanical Engineering. I am very excited to be working with you all as an APSC 101/103 Project Manager, not only for my own experience but to see your unique solutions to the projects this year.

This summer, I worked as a Mechanical Engineering Intern at Evertz Microsystems, a company that develops end-to-end broadcast solutions around the world. During my internship, I designed sheet metal and injection-molded components in CAD, developed engineering tooling for different departments, and created detailed manufacturing drawings.  This was my first opportunity to collaborate and learn from experienced engineers, and it was one that I will never forget.

Outside of classes, I recommend you all get involved and try to find a club or design team that you like. I was a project manager for the Queens BioMechatronics engineering team and was a TA for APSC 142 both very rewarding experiences where I met some awesome people. In my free time, I like to golf and play soccer. Last year, I joined an intramural soccer team and it’s a great way to meet new people and get away from classes.

If I could leave you all with some advice it would be to get involved on teams and clubs to find out more about what you like and what you’re interested in. Your first two years will fly by much faster than you think so take each opportunity you can to meet new people and to try something new.

I’m looking forward to meeting all of you this September! If you have any questions about 101/103 or anything queens don’t hesitate to reach out at 23PKR1@queensu.ca

Cheers!
